SASSA Grants 2026: All 8 Types, Amounts & How to Apply

South Africa has eight main SASSA grants, each with its own amount, age rules and qualifying conditions - and it is easy to apply for the wrong one. This hub gives you the latest 2026 amount for every grant and links you to a full step-by-step guide for each, covering eligibility, required documents, payment dates, the amount, and how to apply. Below you will also find the shared rules that apply to most grants - the means test, the documents you need, how to apply, and how you get paid.

⚠ Beware of scams: Applying for any SASSA grant - and lodging a reconsideration or appeal - is completely free. SASSA will never ask you to pay a fee or share your banking PIN or password. Anyone who asks for payment to "approve" or "speed up" your grant is running a scam. Report fraud on 0800 60 10 11.

Choose Your Grant for the Full Guide

Each guide covers the amount, who qualifies, the documents you need, the payment dates and how to apply.

General Eligibility: The Means Test

Most SASSA grants (except the SRD R370 and the Foster Child Grant) use a means test - a check of your income and assets to confirm you genuinely need support. The exact limits depend on the grant, but the common rules are:

  • You must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee living in South Africa.
  • Your income (and your spouse's, if married) must be below the grant's limit.
  • Your assets must be below the grant's limit.
  • You may receive only one grant for yourself at a time (Grant-in-Aid is the exception - it is paid on top of another grant).
The SRD R370 uses a simpler monthly income check (no more than R624 a month), and the Foster Child Grant does not apply a means test to the foster parent. See each grant's guide for its exact income and asset limits.

Required Documents Checklist

For most grants you will need:

  • Your 13-digit barcoded South African ID (or refugee ID and permit)
  • Proof of residence
  • Proof of income and bank statements for the last 3 months
  • Proof of marital status, and your spouse's ID if married

For child grants (Child Support, Foster, Care Dependency) also bring the child's birth certificate, the court order (foster), and a medical report (care dependency). For the Disability Grant, bring a recent medical or assessment report (not older than 3 months). No ID yet? SASSA accepts a sworn affidavit plus a statement from a trusted person while you apply for an ID at Home Affairs. The exact list is on each grant's guide.

How to Apply: Online vs In-Person

There are two pathways, depending on the grant:

  • Online (SRD R370 only): apply at srd.sassa.gov.za using your ID and cellphone number - no office visit needed. See the SRD R370 guide.
  • In-person (all other grants): the application forms are not online. Visit your nearest SASSA office with your documents and complete the form in front of a SASSA officer. If you are too old or sick to travel, a family member can apply on your behalf with a letter and a doctor's note.

Always keep the receipt SASSA gives you - it is proof that you applied.

After You Apply: Status & Appeals

Processing usually takes up to 3 months for the traditional grants. Once approved, your payments are backdated to the day you applied. You can check your result anytime; here is what each status means:

Status What it means & what to do
Approved You qualify and a payment date has been set. No action needed.
Pending Still under review. Usually clears on its own - see our Pending status guide.
Declined Not approved, with a reason. You can appeal within 30 days if you believe it is wrong.

How You Get Paid

🏦 Bank deposit

Paid straight into your bank account (it must be in your own name). The bank may charge a small fee.

🏧 Postbank / SASSA card

Withdraw cash at Postbank ATMs and Post Offices. Old gold cards must be swapped for the new black card.

🛒 Retail stores

Collect at major supermarkets such as Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay and Boxer.

📲 CashSend / wallet

For SRD, a mobile-wallet or CashSend option if you do not have a bank account (number in your name).

Need a bank account? See our guide to the best banks for SASSA payments.

Which SASSA Grant Should You Apply For?

In short: if you are 60 or older, look at the Old Age Grant; if you cannot work due to a disability, the Disability Grant; if you care for a child, the Child Support, Foster Child or Care Dependency grant depending on your situation; and if you are an unemployed adult with no income, the SRD R370 grant. You can receive only one main grant for yourself at a time.
