What the Different SASSA Statuses Mean

Your SASSA status tells you which stage your SRD grant application has reached - whether it has been approved, is still pending, or has been declined. Below we break down every status you might see and explain, in plain language, what each one means for your payment.

Approved: It means SASSA has approved your application and confirmed that you qualify for the SRD R370 grant. They have also given you your payment date.
Pending: Pending Status means SASSA is still checking your application. They are cross-verifying your details in several databases, such as Home Affairs, UIF, and SARS. You don't need to do anything right now. If there is any issue, SASSA will contact you. You can check your SRD status again later.
Declined: SASSA has declined your application and given you a reason for it. Some possible reasons could be: your monthly income is higher than the SASSA limit, your bank records show higher deposits, you are receiving another grant like UIF, or your identity details did not match during verification.
Reapplication Pending: You need to reapply for the SRD grant because SASSA wants to confirm your details again. This could be because your old application has expired, you didn't confirm it when SASSA asked, or you changed your phone number or bank information. SASSA reviews the data of all grant recipients every month.
Bank Details Pending: When you were filling out your SASSA application, you didn't choose a payment method, or you entered your bank details incorrectly, such as the account number or branch code. It could also mean your bank has not yet confirmed your account with SASSA.
Post Office not selected: Your application/payment has been approved, but you have not yet chosen a payment method in your SRD SASSA portal. You can log in to the SASSA website and add your bank account so that the payment goes directly. If you don't want to use a bank account, you can select a Post Office branch.
Cancelled: SASSA has cancelled your application, and you cannot receive the grant right now. This could be because you do not meet SASSA eligibility criteria, there was fraudulent activity, or you submitted the application multiple times. You will need to reapply.
Application Submitted: Your application was sent successfully and SASSA has received it. Soon, the status may change to "Pending" or something else as they start reviewing it.
eKYC Status Pending: eKYC Pending means SASSA is still checking your personal and bank details against the Home Affairs database. Once the verification is complete, your payment will be approved.
Means Income Source Identified: SASSA has found that you are earning money from another source, receiving another grant, or working at a job. Your monthly income is higher than the SASSA allowed limit, so they have shown the "Income Source Identified" status.

How To Check Identity Verification For SRD R370 Grant

When you apply for the SASSA SRD R370 grant, your identity is verified. This means SASSA checks your personal information with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) to make sure everything is correct. This step is very important to move your application forward. There is no separate platform for identity verification. SASSA includes your identity status in your main SRD application. You can check your verification by using the official SASSA Status Check platform.

Identity Verification Status Messages

  1. Pending DHA Verification — It means SASSA is still checking your ID details with Home Affairs.
  2. Identity Verification Failed — This means SASSA could not match your information with DHA records.
  3. Referred — SASSA could not match your details with DHA records and verification needs review.
  4. Awaiting Identity Verification — The authorities are still checking your identity.
  5. Long-term Pending — A long Pending status indicates that the identity verification process is taking too much time.

How to Fix Identity Verification Issues

  1. Check Your Information — Make sure your ID number, name, and surname are exactly the same as on your South African ID. Sometimes small mistakes can cause problems.
  2. Update DHA Records — If you recently changed your name and the DHA department has not updated the information, the system will not find your information. You will have to fix that with DHA first.
  3. Contact SASSA — If your identity keeps failing even though your details are correct, contact SASSA by calling 0800 60 10 11 or visit your nearest office for help.
How long does verification take? Once DHA records are correct, SASSA identity verification typically takes 5 to 14 working days to process.

  • After updating, changes can take up to 30 days to reflect.
When should you update?
  • You have opened a new bank account.

  • Your bank account is in someone else's name.
  • Your status shows Bank Details Pending.

Why Haven't You Received Payment After SASSA Grant Approval?

If your R370 grant is approved but no money has arrived, you are not alone - this is one of the most common problems beneficiaries face. Here are the usual reasons for the delay, and how to fix each one.

No payday is assigned yetYour status is approved but SASSA will not release any payment until a payday is generated. This issue normally happens when they are still finalizing bank verification or processing your payment day.
Banking details not verifiedIf your banking details are not found on records, the payment is paused until you update or verify your bank details again. Payments will not be transferred if your account is closed, inactive, or not in your name.
Postbank or CashSend option delaysIf you choose a Postbank or CashSend option, there might be a delay. This delay happens due to high demand, card migration issues, or ID verification pending.
System backlogs or delaysSometimes the SASSA department faces some technical backlogs, especially after public holidays or system updates. This can delay the process of payment dates, even for approved grants.
New Postbank Black Card RequiredIf you still use the old gold card, your payment may be blocked until you switch to the new black card, especially in regions like Western Cape.

Why Is My SASSA Grant Status Still Pending After 3 Months?

If your SASSA status has stayed on Pending for several months, it usually means your application is still being reviewed. But there are a few common reasons it can take longer than normal - and simple steps you can take to move things along.

Identity or Bank Verification Not CompletedSASSA works with other government departments to verify your details like ID number, bank details or more. If something is missing or your details are not found on records then your status is still pending.
Fraud Checks Are OngoingThe government has introduced a fraud check process to make sure that only people who genuinely qualify receive grants. This process usually takes time especially if your record is unverified for any reason.
Too Many Applications at OnceThere are millions of applications for SRD grants. This especially happens at the start of a new cycle, or when there is a technical problem or system update.
You Didn't Respond to a Verification SMSIf SASSA has sent a verification SMS for ID verification or some other verification and you did not respond in 72 hours, your application is still pending. Always check your messages for SASSA alerts.

Can SASSA Block Your SRD Grant Without Notice?

SASSA can temporarily block your SRD grant at any time. In many cases they do it without giving notice. The SASSA department does not always send an SMS or letter manually before stopping the grant. Sometimes the system automatically raises issues and blocks the payment. But it is the beneficiary's duty to regularly check the status on the official website or app to stay updated.

Failed ID VerificationIf your ID number is not found in Home Affairs records or the bank account is not in your name, then SASSA will block your status until you verify these details again.
Change in Income StatusIf the system detects that you are receiving income more than R624/month or if your employment status has changed, then they may stop your payments. This can also affect UIF, NSFAS or other government grants.
Duplicate Applications or Fraud DetectionIf your details appear to be duplicated, show possible fraud, or someone else is using your ID, SASSA can freeze your grant without notice and investigate.
Inactive or Blocked Bank AccountIf your bank account is closed, frozen or is not active, the grant cannot be delivered. The grant would be blocked until you fix this problem.
What you can do
  • Visit the SRD Status Check page often.
  • If status is blocked, then complete identity or banking verification.
  • Update your personal and financial details through the SASSA portal.
  • If you believe the block was a mistake, appeal online within 30 days.

What To Do If Your SRD Grant Is Declined?

If your SASSA SRD grant application was declined, you still have the right to appeal and get your grant reviewed. It is a simple process, and many beneficiaries successfully receive their grant after appealing. Follow the step by step guide on How To Do An Appeal On Decline to submit your appeal correctly and increase your chances to get grant approval.

Appeal deadline: 30 days. You must submit your appeal within 30 days of receiving the declined status notification. After 30 days your appeal may not be accepted.

Common Reasons for Decline

  • Your monthly income is higher than the SASSA-allowed limit of R624 per month.
  • Bank records show deposits above the allowed limit.
  • You are receiving another government grant such as UIF or NSFAS.
  • Your identity details could not be verified with DHA records.
  • You are formally employed or have a declared income source.
